Never give up on your team
Sunday
On Sunday I had another relaxing day. In the evening I took my housemate Nick and her boyfriend to the pub with me for the pub quiz. We also took along Caroline our Franco-Dutch ex-housemate guest. Unfortunately because there were four of us we couldn't fit on the table with the people that I normally play with. So we formed a rival team instead. We got 18/40 (my lowest ever score) and my old team got 31/40 (third prize). Moral of the story..... be more clever so you can win whatever team you are on. It doesn't really matter because we had fun (more importantly, Matt and I beat the girls at pool). It was nice as it was the first time in the entire year that I had managed to get Nick out to a pub. I think she enjoyed it!!!???? The only regret I have is the fact that I now wonder if we had found a bigger table and joined my old team would we have scored 49/40??
Monday
I went to the seaside (Exmouth) again today. On my drive down I had one of those scary but at the same time reassuring motoring near misses. I was driving out of Exeter in a 30 zone (the only place I believe in speed limits), driving on auto pilot (something I am good at). The next thing I know, I am stationary in the middle of the main road with a strong smell of burnt rubber entering my nasal passages. In front of my car is a teenage boy on his bike with his hand on my bonnet. At this point my brain switches back on and I can remember how this situation came about. The stupid boy who was riding on the opposite pavement just cut across both lanes of traffic without thinking it might be a good idea to have a look first. He looked like he might need a change of underwear, and just kept shouting "I'm sorry, I'm sorry!" to me. I waved that it was OK (after all no damage done to my car and he might have learnt a lesson.) The good bit is that it is reassuring to know that when you are driving along a road you know like the back of your hand and not really concentrating, that your sub conscious is still aware of everything around you and had already had my foot hovering over the break peddle in expectation of his stupid behaviour. It's a nice skill to have, especially on motorways where the majority of stupid drivers hang out. The next day I spotted a speed camera van parked next to where it had happened. This I must admit is the first time I can agree with a speed camera because if I had been doing 40 I wouldn't have stopped in time. Unfortunately these "safety camera" vans normally hang out on a deserted A-Road or dual carriageway.
Despite the weather forecast saying it would only be 21 degrees it certainly felt like the hottest day so far. The sand on the beach was too hot to stand on bare foot and even with dollops of sun cream after 3 hours I definitely felt like it was time to get some shade. Also my parking ticket had expired.
It was really nice to spend a relaxing afternoon with two of my former housemates (Laura and Jenny) as it may well be the last time I see them as we'll soon all be going our separate ways. It is great now that everybody is stress free apart from the worry of exam results. Everybody is a lot friendlier and more laid back.
