Parental Maintenance is required

This weekend I am going to head home to visit my parents. Visiting ones parents is a very important activity while being a student and should not be underestimated. Obviously there is the "I love you" aspect to visiting them, but with my parents there are also some other important things that need to be dealt with:

- My parents now live alone as both my brother and I have move out. Unfortunately this means that they have nobody to regulate them and keep them in check. Basically they become uncool because there is no one to tell them how to be cool. It is not there fault, just inevitable. 2 days and I should have them back on track.
- While I am at university and too busy to do any paid work (only in my 3rd year!) I am sometimes dependent on financial "handouts" from Mummy and Daddy. Therefore it is always good to remind them what I look like and who I am so they don't forget to keep sending the money.
- My parents organise Christian Aid week for our village. This is this week, which means that there will be lots of money to be counted. I find helping with this is fun in a very Scrooge Mc Duck way.

But this visit is not just about begging, as I have discovered this week that I can beg over the phone. My lovely Father yesterday agreed to let me put £186 on his credit card for two new tyres I needed, which I can pay back when I "start working again". Isn’t he wonderful? So I will go back and help him with whatever new gardening project he has going and listen for hours upon end to his rantings about the new BBC weather graphics. I don’t mind, it’s my way of saying "thank you".

Well, that's what I am going to do this weekend, but what have I been doing today?

I forced myself out of bed at 9am and then again at 9.30am and stumbled up to campus for a game of footy with my football team mates. We were playing 7-a-side in a thing called 'the cage' which as far as I could see is just some kind of exercise torture chamber with no means of escape. Well at least that's what it felt like with the Uber Hangover still in slight attendance. I scored a wonderful goal in the last minute, but this achievement was offset rather by the 10 awful misses that preceded it.

Then; Lunch, read Times, Su- Doku in 1min 32secs, and back home to watch Neighbours (what an episode!).

In the afternoon I took my car to a little tyre replacement centre on the other side of Exeter. It was run by proper Devon people. This meant that I couldn't understand a word that they said, but they seemed nice enough.

Life in England can be boring, but luckily the authorities do there best to cheer up my day. Today they decided to let out some mad people. As I was driving back from the garage I saw this old lady walking along the street in a dressing gown (it was 3pm, warm and sunny), which was weird enough, but her costume was enhanced by a pair of novelty slippers. You know the ones..... These were about the size of a prize winning pumpkin and looked like they were supposed to be some kind of animal. Strange.

How useful is the Daddy credit card? I love it, although my father has started operating the system in reverse - when I ask him to pay for something he comes back with "Can't you just put it on your card and I'll pay the bill when it comes?" Arguably, this is better, because I don't part with any money at all. Almost worth hearing either (a) a story from when he used to play football, or (b) "Whats is Sounness doing?" for the 3973rd time.

The trip home to humour the parents also often has the benefit of the sly tenner or twenty from your mother, almost invariably accompanied by the immortal line "Don't tell your father".

Parents - you gotta love 'em.

Anyone see Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? It's like with the kid, they finally figure out he's not real.

A couple posts this week, and I'm suddenly getting a grasp (heh) of su doku. I..... didn't know.

Hairy palms anyone?
